Anbox is like an emulator that helps you to run any android application on the Ubuntu platform. The below step-by-step guide helps you to easily install and configure the Anbox emulator on your Linux system.

  • Update your System
  • Add Anbox repository to your system
  • Install and start the Kernel Modules
  • Install Anbox using snap
  • Install Android Command line tools and start ADB server
  • Download and Install the APK file of PLAYit

Step 1: Update your System

First of all, you need to ensure that whether your system is up-to-date or not. To check, launch the command terminal and type the following command

  • sudo apt-get update
  • sudo apt-get upgrade

Step 2: Add Anbox repository to your system:

Now, you need to add the PPA to your Ubuntu system and also you need to install essential and required anbox modules and dkms package that contains Kernel modules. For that, type the following command on terminal

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:morphis/anbox-support
  • After that, you need to update your system once again by typing sudo apt update on terminal.

Step 3: Install and start the Kernel Modules:

Then you have to install the appropriate kernel module using the given commands 

  • sudo apt install anbox-modules-dkms
  • Use the following commands to start the kernel modules manually
  • sudo modprobe ashmem_linux
  • sudo modprobe binder_linux
  • To ensure or verify whether the new kernel modules have been installed successfully or not, type 
  • Ls -1 /dev/{ashmem, binder}
install anbox-modules-dkms
 install anbox-modules-dkms

Step 4: Install Anbox using snap:

Now, it’s time to install Anbox using snap command.  First, make sure you have installed snap on your system. Ubuntu 18.04 and above should come with the default snap. Then enter the given command

  • snap - -version
  • sudo snap install - -devode - -beta anbox
  • Step 5: Install Android Studio

To install android applications on Ubuntu, you need to install android development tools along with Anbox.  So, first start with the installation of java for Linux.

  • sudo apt install openjdk-11-jdk

There is no downloadable binary package in the Android Studio app. So, you need to download it from the internet. Once the download gets completed, go back to the command terminal to extract the file.

  •  cd ~/Downloads
  • Unzip android-studio-ide-*-linux.zip
  • To start the installation process, go to the android studio bin directory
  • cd android-studio/bin
  • Then run the installation script of Android Studio
  • ./studio.sh

Click on ‘Next’ to continue from the welcome screen Android studio Wizard. Then select the ‘Standard’ option and click on Next. Choose the user interface theme and follow the on-screen instructions to successfully complete the installation.

Step 6: Install Android Command-line tools and start ADB server:

  • Type the following command on terminal to install Android command line tools
  • sudo apt install android-tools-adb
  • Now, Anbox is ready to go, but first, you need to start the ADB server
  • adb start-server

Step 7: Download and Install the APK file of PLAYit:

The APK file of PLAYit is available on its official website itself. Go to www.PLAYit.app and that APK format of the app on your Linux system. After downloading gets completed, go to the downloads directory and install it using the below commands.

  • cd ~/Downloads
  • adb install game.apk
adb install game.apk
adb install game.apk

Once the installation was completed, open the Anbox from your applications folder. Now, you will see the PLAYit app on it.
